Packers 53-Man Roster Projection: Preaseason Update

The Green Bay Packers are just days away from their third preseason game, the so-called dress rehearsal. And as that game comes closer, so does the day that the Packers will need to trim their 90-man roster, down to 53.

Some of these decisions are easy, some can even be called no-brainers. But, not all of them will be easy and many players still have a chance to make a final impression and earn their way onto the final 53. However, up to this point, we have already seen plenty.

We have seen guys like Kentrell Brice emerge. We have seen about a million wide receivers make a play for the roster and we have even seen Carl Bradford, a former draft bust, revive his career and take advantage of his final opportunity in Green Bay.

The question is, will it be enough? At this point, it’s hard to say for guys like Brice and Bradford, but without further ado, here is my latest projection of who will be on the Packers final 53-man roster.

QB (2) – Aaron Rodgers, Brett Hundley.

Analysis: No surprise here. Unless Hundley is out for a long time, Joe Callahan is headed for the practice squad.

RB/FB (4) – Eddie Lacy, James Starks, John Crockett, Aaron Ripkowski.

Analysis – Brandon Burks has also pushed for a spot, but I am not sure I see Green Bay keeping five running backs.

WR (7) – Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Trevor Davis, Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis.

Analysis – Janis sticks despite the injury, in part based on his potential. Unless it gets to the point that they stick him on IR or IR designated to return. If Green Bay decides to cut even further at WR, Abbrederis will be the one to go.

TE (3) – Jared Cook, Richard Rodgers, Justin Perillo.

Analysis – I just haven’t seen enough from Kennard Backman to make him the fourth tight end, I’d rather keep a seventh wide receiver or a ninth offensive lineman.

OL (9)  – Bryan Bulaga, JC Tretter, Josh Sitton, TJ Lang, David Bakhtiari, Corey Linsley, Jason Spriggs, Don Barclay, Kyle Murphy.

Analysis – Barclay has looked like his old self in camp and if he can keep it up, he may just stick again.

DL (5) – Mike Daniels, Letroy Guion, Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry, Christian Ringo.

Analysis – Will be interesting to see what happens when Mike Pennel returns from suspension early in the season.

LB (11) – Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, Blake Martinez, Sam Barrington, Nick Perry, Datone Jones, Jake Ryan, Jayrone Elliott, Kyler Fackrell, Joe Thomas, Carl Bradford.

Bradford is aided by a couple of suspensions but for now, he is among the Packers’ top 53 guys.

DB (9) – Sam Sheilds, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Morgan Burnett, Micah Hyde, Chris Banjo, Kentrell Brice, LaDarius Gunter.

Analysis: If I had one more roster spot, it would have went to Josh Hawkins.

ST – Mason Crosby, Tim Masthay, Rick Lovato.

One comment

  • It’s time for Barclay to go. I’d much rather see Josh Hawkins help keep our secondary deep. Our offensive line is fine without him.The team has more injuries in the defensive secondary then the OL. Besides Barclay really played poorly last year.
