Green Bay Packers Early 2016 53-Man Roster Projection

Now that the 2016 NFL draft has concluded, the Green Bay Packers have, for the most part, the players that they will take to training camp.

There may be a few more players added, but I wouldn’t expect any of significance — just rookie or street free agents. Some moves could still happen, such as the signing of John Kuhn or Bret Goode, but even then, it’s safe to say the Packers are just about done for the offseason.

This past weekend in Green Bay, was the first rookie mini camp and following that, here is my first projection of the Packers 2016 53-man roster.

QB (2) – Aaron Rodgers, Brett Hundley –

No surprises here. Hundley is the clear No. 2 quarterback and will be unless something unforeseen happens.

RB/FB (4) – Eddie Lacy, James Starks, John Crockett, Aaron Ripkowski –

Can’t see the Packers keeping more than four backs on the roster at this point. If John Kuhn comes back, Crockett could be the odd man out too.

TE (3) – Richard Rodgers, Jared Cook, Justin Perillo –

Three tight ends seems a little light, but there are better players at other positions. I chose Perillo over Kennard Backman right now, but it will be a close race.

OL (9) – David Bahktiari, Bryan Bulaga, Corey Linsley, Josh Sitton, T.J. Lang, J.C. Tretter, Jason Spriggs, Kyle Murphy, Lane Taylor.

With two picks in the draft, the Packers definitely upgraded the depth on their offensive line.

WR(7) – Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Jared Abbrederis, Trevor Davis, Ty Montgomery.

I know seven wide receivers sounds like a lot, but with suspensions at a few spots, Green Bay has extra spots and all seven of those receivers are worth keeping. Injury will likely sort that situation out.

DL (6) -Kenny Clark, Letroy Guion, Mike Daniels, Dean Lowry, Datone Jones, Christian Ringo.

Mike Pennel won’t count against the roster until his suspension is up, that gives a guy like Ringo a chance to make an impact before that happens.

LB (10) – Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, Nick Perry, Jayrone Elliot, Kyler Fackrell, Sam Barrington, Jake Ryan, Blake Martinez, Lerentee McCray, Beniquez Brown.

Beniquez Brown is the first UDFA on the 53-man roster, but he won’t be the last.

CB (5) – Sam Shields, Damarious Randall, Quinten Rollins, Micah Hyde, Ladarius Gunter.

Hyde will play some at safety. This is a position to watch for an UDFA. There is also a lot of youth, yet there is talent too.

S (4) – Morgan Burnett, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Chris Banjo, Kentrell Brice.

I love Brice. He’s fast and he’s physical. He could be a beast on special teams right away.

Specialists (3) – Tim Masthay, Mason Crosby, Rick Lovato.

Status quo.

The perfect 53, finally a man who doesn’t think keeping 7 WR’s is too many. For those who think it’s too many then look at the TE or RB position and tell me who’s worth keeping over Abby, Janis, or Davis. The Packers kept Bush for years because he was a ST demon. Janis is the main reason the Packers finished #1 in the NFL with 4.2 yards per return on punt returns. Like Chris said the Packers have 4 weeks to get though before Pennel comes back. He’s also left Goodson off the roster (Thank God)….Nice 53 Chris

Thanks! I agree completely on RB and tight end to me one of those wide receivers is better than another tight end. Yeah I am not a huge fan of goodson. Special teams are his only chance cause I think there are even some rookie free agents that can push him at corner.

I too think you nailed it. I wonder if they will keep kuhn? He is mikes pet favorite. They need two FB’s is foolsih when a lot of teams have none and use a TE for blocking.

I think he has a chance. I got McCray over him right now, just cause the Packers gave him like $100k in guarantees. So he’s gonna have a good chance to make it, but Gilbert will be in the mix. Could be a PS squad guy.
