The Green Bay Packers are taking their usual slow and steady pace when it comes to free agency. But so far, it’s hard to argue with anything they have done.
Keeping Mason Crosby, Nick Perry and Lane Taylor, were all good moves. Not overpaying for a Coby Fleener or Dwayne Allen was also smart. Sometimes in NFL free agency, the best moves you make, are the ones you don’t.
Yet at this point, the Packers still have plenty of work to do and one player they should focus on re-signing is B.J. Raji.
Raji is 30 years old and yes he has had injury concerns, but he played well last season and has become an important figure in the locker room. Plus, nose tackles like him don’t grow on trees.
Furthermore, if the Packers were aggressive in their approach with Raji, they could probably lock him up at a reasonable price without much difficulty. And that would give the Packers a formidable front with Mike Daniels, Raji, Letroy Guion, Mike Pennell and Datone Jones.
The other player the Packers Should bring back is John Kuhn. I know he isn’t flashy and that Aaron Ripkowksi looks like a beast, but I still think Kuhn can be a valuable asset for this team.
Kuhn is an outstanding blocker, both in the run game and in pass protection. He can run the ball in a pinch and is very good in short-yardage situations. He also has the trust of Aaron Rodgers.
Kuhn is a glue guy. And he is the kind of player you need to win championships.
I am not saying the Packers need to make these moves, but the sooner they are done, the better. They still need to address inside linebacker and tight end, but if Raji and Kuhn are back, then the team’s list of needs will be shrunk even further.
