Packers Forum: Grading Green Bay’s Offseason

Now that the NFL Free Agency period is winding down and teams are turning their attention to the draft, I thought it would be a good time to look back on the Packers offseason up to this point. I think the team still has some items left on the agenda, mainly re-signing backup quarterback Matt Flynn and utility back/fan favorite John Kuhn, not to mention Jermichael Finley if he ever gets medical clearance.

However, we can talk about those players when those moves finally get made. Right now though, I would like to gauge your thoughts on the Packers offseason thus far.

I usually hate assigning grades to things but it’s a useful exercise if kept in the correct context. Personally, I couldn’t be happier with the Packers offseason to this point.

The team got a long-term deal with Sam Shields, got Raji back for a year, kept Neal, brought back Quarless and of course made the big splash of signing Julius Peppers.

So to assign a grade I would give them an B+. I am going to be a little critical because they allowed Dietrich-Smith to walk on a contract that was very affordable. The team is placing a ton of faith in J.C. Tretter.

I have a lot of faith and trust in Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson but I think this is a bit of a risk and the backup quarterback position as well as safety last year proves they are not right 100 percent of the time.

I can understand the move, especially if Tretter plays to a similar level of Dietrich-Smith, because even though the deal EDS got from the Bucs wasn’t crazy, it’s probably at least $10 million more in total value than Tretter’s.

Anyways, I am excited about the addition of Peppers and I think if the Packers can get a big jump from a few defenders (Jones, Hyde, Boyd) and get others to stay healthy (Perry, Harwayd, Matthews) the defense could be vastly improved.

But anyways I would love to hear your thoughts and get a discussion going. I also want to know who you guys think the best signing was overall. To me, it was Peppers. I loved that Green Bay got an athletic playmaker. It was out of the norm and I think it shows the front office and coaching staff believe they are close and I do too.

  1. I thought so too but he has come on in recent weeks. I think there is a chance he could return to the Packers on a one-year deal worth a few million bucks. He will have a big impact if this team makes the playoffs.

  2. This season is Peppers swan song. I believe he will retire after this year. I really thought this years Packers team would be able to win the Super Bowl and Peppers would get that elusive ring to go along with him into the HOF. Rodgers is starting to look like the MVP Rodgers of 2011. Receivers are holding on to the football and Arod is showing the precision passing game and throwing in rhythm which has been missing. We must run the table to have any chance and Rodgers knows that. By winning the division we’ll at least be guaranteed one home game. GO PACK GO!!!
